How Does a Textbook Rental Work?

Friday, August 19th, 2011

A textbook rental can be a great way for a college student that is low on funds to obtain a book that is required for a course. Often times, students only need the book for one semester and end up selling the book back for a very small percentage of what he or she originally paid. A smarter option for these situations would be to rent a textbook from a site such as www.chegg.com or www.textbookrentals.com. Some sites only allow for a set rental period, such as four months, but others offer flexible plans, such as 60 days, 90 days, or 125+ days. The textbook rental prices are typically about 25% of the list price. Be sure to include the two-way shipping costs in your decision to rent a book as opposed to purchasing it. Also, renting a textbook is not your best option if you know that you will need the textbook for another course or for reference. Many textbooks are worth holding on to even after you graduate college.
